This journal entry compiles my thoughts over the fourth chapter, Design from A Whole New Mind.
Design January 13, 2007
When I first thought of design, I had thought of designer clothing. Shoes, bags, prices over my head, and cute clothes. I had always thought that the designer life has always belonged to the rich and famous. The people who walked down the red carpet and smile for the media, and for all the world. After completing this chapter, I realized that my thought of design is utterly different from what it actually is. Design is everywhere. Design is the outfit one puts together in the morning, whether it match or not. Design is the house that is bought and the new owner has to decide what furniture will go where. Design is trying to decide where to put the new plant you bought in with the rest of your decor. Design is life! Without it, one may not know how to pull one's life together. Their ends would be loosely tied. Daniel Pink puts all of this into retrospect as he discusses design, and its meaning.
Design is a crucial part of everyday life. If you think about it the average use of a toaster is "15 minutes per day" says Pink, and the rest of the day it merely sits there, more an object of pure taste, literally. Think about your everyday tools that you use hardly anytime. Such as your pencil sharpener, that is practically useless since mechanical pencils have revolutionized the writing industry. Throughout this chapter Daniel Pink talks all about design and how it has changed the world. There was a young designer whom when he told his parents that he wanted to be a designer, his parents asked him what the heck that was. That was twenty years ago. Today, if you don't know about design you may be having a hard time to even survive. It is not about function today but design.
Design has changed the world. Doctors are now taking design into account when they change their waiting rooms and patient rooms in hospitals. It has been proven that the more appealing and friendly the room is, the more likely the patient will improve quickly, and sooner than if they were in a plain room that was drab and down. It's amazing to think about these statistics, and how much design has changed the world. I think that it will continue to play a large part of people's lives, and soon we will not even remember the time when nothing had design in mind.
At the end of each chapter from chapter 4 to 9 there is a portfolio of things to do after the reader reads that chapter.
There is a choice between several activities, I have chosen to... read a design magazine in order to help to sharpen my eye to design, and inspire me to design. I am very interested in design, and I believe that this would be a very enjoyable, ralaxing literature to endeavor towards. I will most likely begin with "O" magazine and "Real Simple".
Along with reading design magazines I wil try to design something myself, to take apart in the " 'Third Industrial Revolution' ".
I will post my design and my reactions to my the magazines soon.
Wow after reading a design magazine, I feel drawn into the design market, and I am ready to create my own pieces of intriquing art. I sampled the taste of design through a makeover magazine, in which different rooms of the house were updated to fit the latest and most comfortable fashion. There were absolutely no advertisements in the middle of the magazine, so I could just be exposed to the appealing look of the design of certain pieces. And boy! After reading this I was inspired to create something. I had to think of something. So I decided on designing a pillow. As my room is purple with a french air, I resolved on fashioning a purple pillow with a flowery pattern, and a french word on the front. After I finish creating it, I will put it on my bed. An item pleasing to the eye, which inhances the air of the room. I think that soon after that first discovery, I feel passionate about design.

Here is my design for a pillow...
Design could be anything, including this modern art-
Here is a fun video of the sidewalk chalk art, (3-D), and the man who makes this art http://media.cnpapers.com/chalk/
